A Farewell to Arms is a fictional novel by Ernest Hemingway that was first published in 1929. Plot Synopsis A Farewell to Arms tells the story of Frederic Henry, an ambulance driver in the Italian Army during World War I. Henry is injured in battle and placed in a hospital to recover. It is there he meets Catherine with whom he begins to fall in love. After Henry has healed, he is sent back into battle, leaving a pregnant Catherine behind. The Italian forces are defeated by the Germans and, as punishment, the Italian government begins executing former offices as traitors. Henry eventually escapes to reunite with Catherine and live in Switzerland.
